360 Play re-opens to welcome local families for some safe smiles

May the 17th was a happy day at 360 Play’s centres for customers and staff.  This leading leisure attraction group closed its doors along with the rest of the country’s hospitality businesses back in December last year, with the hope it would only be a few weeks before they could reopen.  Five months later and in line with stage 3 of the road map, 360 Play finally got to welcome back many local families for some well overdue fun and play.

“The coronavirus has had deep and wide impacts on our city, our families and many of the local businesses that serve them.  Some of the most impacted and yet least talked about are our children.  As a father of two boys I have seen some of the impacts this latest lockdown has had on them which is why I am so pleased we can open up our attraction for local families to be able to come and enjoy some play time without screens”  Founder and Managing Director Duncan Phillips.

Maureen, grandmother to Reece and Fay, was visiting Rushden Lakes’ centre and said  “Its amazing to be back and able to spend some quality playtime with my grandchildren in the safe clean environment that 360 Play gives us. The kids adore it here and it makes for an easy day out”

360 Centre Manager Lauren Jenkins said “The second lock down has been very hard on many of our staff and so we are really pleased to be able to get back to doing what we love here at 360, and hopefully put some smiles back on our customers faces.  We will keep in place our covid safe operating procedures and be limiting numbers while we steadily emerge from the latest lockdown. I have been with 360 Play for 5 years now and have really missed seeing the centre full of life over the last few months, so I and all the team are loving the noise our first customers are making with us today.”

360 Play was founded over 10 years ago and now has seven play centres across the South East and South Midlands.  Founder Duncan Phillips started the business to give families like his own a place where they could all play together.  Utilising hands on creative play environments, physically active play settings and skills based play attractions, the centre encourages intergenerational active play in a more traditional way, encouraging adults to spend time playing with their children and having fun too.

360 Play Young Minds Campaign

360 Play’s ‘Young Minds Campaign’ aims to support children and families across our communities who have been isolated throughout the pandemic, those who have lost jobs, those who have been sick or those who have struggled to cope and need a helping hand back to normality. Passionate dad, owner and founder Duncan Phillips has pledged over £60,000 worth of tickets for children and families who have struggled through lockdown, for 360 Play centres across the country.

“As a father of two boys through lockdown and passionate about giving children the best start in life, the pandemic has had a significant impact on the younger members of our society.  Unfortunately we may only see the impacts when the world does start to return to normal, but the warning signs are very clear to see.”  Duncan Phillips – Founder and Managing Director

NOMINATIONS HAVE NOW FINISHED

We have closely followed the child health experts throughout the pandemic and considered where we could have an impact to help our children.

Prof Russell Viner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, addressing MPs on the Education Select Committee earlier this year: “When we close schools we close their lives, the pandemic has caused a range of harms to children across the board from being isolated and lonely to suffering from sleep problems and reduced physical activity.”

Dr Kathryn Lester, senior lecturer in Developmental Psychology at the University of Sussex, writes that: “The importance of play for children’s wellbeing is still all too easily overlooked, and sadly even more so in the midst of a global pandemic.”

The Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. “While posing a lower risk of physical health problems for children, Covid-19 has transformed the social lives of children more rapidly than anyone could have imagined”

We have also watched our own families struggle through lock down and missing their peers.

“I am passionate that it’s now we need to get our children out from home lockdowns and start playing together with others in safe and creative settings that will help re-introduce them to social interaction off screens.  Through our Young Minds Campaign if we can reach out and give just one family some help right now it will have been a success.  That’s why I am so proud to play our part reaching out to thousands of families who may not have the ability to access our sites to come along as our guests and play again in active and open settings.“  Duncan Phillips

In this campaign we are reaching out to our local communities to help find out who really need a day of carefree family fun. It’s more important now than ever that we look after our youngest generation and their developing minds.  If you know someone in your community who would benefit from this we need you to nominate them.

For the first 30 days of 360 Play reopening, in stage three of the roadmap, we will be gifting over 50 tickets daily to the most deserving families in our communities. Friends, families, local charities or CAHMs teams can nominate families who they consider would benefit from a play date together.

Our children have struggled with isolation throughout the pandemic, all their usual social interaction with family and friends that shapes who they are has gone. Parents have been working from home whilst home schooling and providing childcare. Babies have been born who have never met or had interaction with other babies or adults.

Research shows that the formative years are intrinsically important to a child’s development and that the role of play is vital for both psychological and physical growth.

Alison Morton – Head of The Institute of Health Visiting says services have been badly hit during the pandemic with specialist nurses pulled away from their duties to help out on the Covid front line. In some areas, health visitor numbers have dropped by half. Meanwhile, the absence of baby and parent groups, and the friendships that naturally develop from them, has meant the babies of the pandemic have not benefited from the stimulus of social contact that is vital to their development.

For the majority of the school aged children all of their home schooling activities and hobbies have been through screens on their televisions, iPads and computers. Screens have been used (understandably so) as virtual baby sitters for younger children so parents can continue to work and we all feel the frustration of daily Zoom calls!

The 360 Play Young Minds Campaign has been created by Duncan with the support of his management teams across our centres and the backing of local MPs, children’s mental health charities, local businesses and more.

A few words from some of our team members:

“The young minds campaign is something I am so proud to be part of,  I’ve seen firsthand the relief on the children and their families faces as they run through the door. It’s never been more important that we take the time to look after the young minds in our community. I saw it personally in my own family. As my little brother is autistic the time inside preventing him from socialising made him take a back step. He did not want to leave the house even to see his friends and family. He came to 360 post the second lockdown and you could see the tension drop from his shoulders as he ran through the play frame and just really enjoyed himself. The same for my mum as she sat down, enjoyed a coffee and watched. There are so many children who will have despite all efforts, been affected by this lockdown and it’s important that all of us are doing our part in supporting families through the return to normal. It truly takes a village and I’m proud 360 is a part of that.”

Chloe Twiselton – Centre Manager 360 Play Milton Keynes

“As a mum myself who has spent the most part of the last year self isolating at home with my children, struggling at the most part to be the best pretend teacher I could be, the Young Minds Campaign is such an honour to be part of to bring happiness back to all the children and their families. The children who have been home schooled, missed out on the socialising and the lockdown babies who haven’t had the chance to experience such fun yet deserve an amazing day out to enjoy being kids again.”

Amiileigh Boules – Centre Manager 360 Play Leicester

“As a parent of two children and also a centre manager at 360 Play, I’ve seen first hand how crucial it is for children to be able to play freely in a setting where they can use their imagination and creativity, burn off energy and to interact with children of their own age.

The 360 Play Young Minds Campaign is a huge project where I can help pioneer this belief and be a part of giving back to not only parents, but to children who’ve had a hard time adapting to life in lockdown.

My team and I are so eager to get back to what we do best, and start to put a smile back on the faces of our local community”

James Hack – Centre Manager 360 Play Basildon.

And a customer telling 360 Play how important our role will be in the coming months after lockdown;

”My son is autistic and has struggled coming in and out of lockdowns with some anxiety and social skills. He has become quite withdrawn and will avoid playing alongside people he doesn’t know well or going out at all.  He is much more content at home now. I know it’s important that he socialises, but I was worried how I would encourage him to do so. I brought him to 360 post the second lockdown after watching the safety video online. He loved every minute and so did I.  Well distanced, clean as always and an enjoyable atmosphere. My son interacted with staff and other children from a distance. I spoke to other mums across the distanced tables, and I watched my son completely relax and smile so much. We were both anxious when we came in, but we left with a new lease of life. Thank you for this piece of normal and what will hopefully be an early night!”

Claire Hatch – Parent to a 10 year old boy.

Duncan Phillips – The Incoming Chair of BALPPA

Duncan Phillips, owner and founder of 360 Play, will be taking the Chairmanship role of the UK attractions group BALPPA for the next 2 years. Having been brought up in the leisure and theme park industry and filling the vice chair position throughout the pandemic, his experience will be invaluable in taking the UK attractions out the other side of the lockdown.

Founded in 1936, BALPPA is the non profit-making Trade Association representing the interests of owners, managers, suppliers and developers in the UK’s commercial leisure parks, piers, zoos, family entertainment centres (indoor play and soft play centres) and static visitor attractions sector.

Amongst BALPPA’s principal aims are to represent the needs and concerns of the industry to HM Government departments, policy-makers and influencers and to promote safe practice throughout the industry.

BALPPA has been particularly active over the past year representing and fighting for the leisure and hospitality industries that have been devastated by the pandemic.

A few words from Duncan:

“Our sector has had one of the most difficult times ever experienced in our lifetimes and the need to work together for the good of all has been the defining value of BALPPA this last 12 months. Under the careful Chairmanship of Richard Mancey the association has had to respond to unprecedented challenges as we have worked to serve the membership in new ways. At this time I would like to pay heartfelt thanks on behalf of the industry for Richard’s commitment to the sector and working hard to ensure our collective needs are put forward at the highest levels, at all times. On a more personal level, working alongside Richard these last two years as Vice Chairman has enabled me to appreciate his calm approach to even the most challenging of situations, thank you Richard. As we all start to look towards our industry opening back up again, BALPPA has learnt much through the pandemic that I hope will enable us to shape the Association in a way fit for the future and become even more responsive to the needs of all its members. The Pandemic has forced us to do things differently, some of which have been successful, and some of which we can’t wait to leave behind and get back to traditional methods. As your incoming Chairman I want to focus on what we have learnt to do well while still remembering what brings us all together as a body and has served us so well for many years. The use of new methods of connecting and working has certainly been one of the key learnings for me through the pandemic. Through my Chairmanship I hope to build on this to widen the reach and access to BALPPA. Not just to the key decision makers and thought leaders of organisations but to the many talented, passionate individuals who deliver our great products every day across the UK. These industry professionals, either starting out, or part way through their industry journey should be able to access all the benefits our association has to offer. By widening the organisation’s reach I think we will find greater strength and diversity of members to equip BALPPA as a must-have for tomorrow’s industry professionals. I would also like to thank Terry Monkton in agreeing to support me and the BALPPA team on this journey as my Vice Chair and I very much welcome his wider understanding of the sector from the trade side. Over the coming months as we emerge from “pandemic crisis management mode” I very much welcome meeting up with many lifelong industry friends and colleagues across the membership to see what we have learnt and what BALPPA needs to do tomorrow. Finally on a very personal note I still remember my first BALPPA event experience back in 1986 as a very young helper serving food to guests during a BALPPA Summer Conference visit to our family’s theme park Gulliver’s Kingdom. It will therefore be a great honour to serve you as your Chairman in 2021-23.”

Our family visit to 360 Play

Read how Natalie Ellison and family enjoyed their first visit to 360 Play since lockdown.

Like most parents, COVID has brought a lot of fear into my life. To the point that I didn’t even go to a shop for 13 weeks, just walks with the family where I knew I could socially distance myself. As time has gone on I’ve found confidence in doing lots more things So, as we try and find a ‘new normal’ it was important for the girls (and my own sanity!) that we found places to go and enjoy together still.

When I heard 360 was opening but without its usual soft play; like others I questioned how it would be possible? How would it work? What facilities would be open? How would I book? How would I keep my children and I safe whilst still having stress free fun? Today I booked in and wanted to talk you through the process.

Booking:

Booking was a simple process online. It enabled me to book us in for an allocated time- I selected 3-5pm. I have attached the prices in my pics. I then received my tickets via email.

Arrival:

I arrived and saw that there were signs informing me of where to stand and their procedures. Someone came and took our temps and sprayed our hands with anti bac. We then went to reception, showed our tickets and each child received their own bag of toys to play with whilst there. Protected screen between the employee and us.

Facilities:

We went on the dodgems, which was sprayed in between users and socially distanced rules applied at all times. We then went upstairs to the street where my girls and nephew loved playing. They enjoyed the variety of toys in their bags and they have several barcodes to scan in stations which gave us quizzes to do and games to play. This really was a perk for us as it gave us lots to talk about and play. My girls particularly loved the vets one about baby animals.

Outside we played in the sand, boats and the climbing frame. It was lovely and the kids all really enjoyed it! We ran out of time to go on the carousel as time slipped away nicely, however that looked great too and wiped in between sessions. We really did spend more time on things we wouldn’t usually, which was a really nice experience.

Food and drinks are still available- I enjoyed a lovely mocha.

Basically, the experience IS different. If you’re expecting a soft play centre like before then you will be disappointed. However if you are expecting a fun place to take your kids for a few hours that is cheap then it’s perfect. The price reflects the fact it’s not all open.

For me, a nice hot drink with happy children made me smile and I felt super safe and confident at all times. It’s nice to find some ‘normality’ and this afternoon certainly didn’t disappoint. So much so… I’ve booked in for later in the week!

So I would definitely recommend for anyone considering it. I hope to anyone feeling nervous I’ve helped reassure you, as I totally understand the anxiety surrounding finding our new normal but every time we do something like this I feel a step closer to normal (and a little more sane 😉)
